Saying and thinking

అని for what is said, thought or asked.

Telugu reports speech by quoting it and adding అని ani "saying", then a verb such as చెప్పు ceppu "tell", అడుగు aḍugu "ask" or అనుకొను anukonu "think". The quote keeps the speaker's own words, so "he said he would come" is "he said, 'I will come'".

In speech and in much writing, అని joins the word before it, which drops its final vowel: వస్తాను అని vastānu ani becomes వస్తానని vastānani, and వస్తుంది అని vastuṁdi ani becomes వస్తుందని vastuṁdani.

Names and meanings

అను anu "say, call" gives the question for what something is called, and అనే anē "called" before a noun.

Because

అని after a thought can also give the reason for an action:

Want to

"Want to" is the -ఆలి form, అని and ఉంది uṁdi: నాకు ఇండియా వెళ్ళాలని ఉంది nāku iṁḍiyā veḷḷālani uṁdi "I want to go to India", literally "to me there is 'I should go to India'" (Must, can, may).
