Plurals
The ending -లు and how nouns change before it.
The plural ending is -లు -lu. Many nouns simply add it, but the end of the noun often changes. After a number, the noun is plural: రెండు పుస్తకాలు reṁḍu pustakālu "two books".
| Change | Singular | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| Add -లు | కుక్క kukka dog | కుక్కలు kukkalu |
| అమ్మాయి ammāyi girl | అమ్మాయిలు ammāyilu | |
| రోజు rōju day | రోజులు rōjulu | |
| -ం becomes -ఆలు | పుస్తకం pustakaṁ book | పుస్తకాలు pustakālu |
| దేశం dēśaṁ country | దేశాలు dēśālu | |
| -డు drops, or becomes -ళ్ళు | స్నేహితుడు snēhituḍu friend | స్నేహితులు snēhitulu |
| తమ్ముడు tammuḍu younger brother | తమ్ముళ్ళు tammuḷḷu | |
| Some nouns in -ఇ take -ఉలు | మనిషి maniṣi person | మనుషులు manuṣulu |
| విద్యార్థి vidyārthi student | విద్యార్థులు vidyārthulu | |
| -లు, -ల్లు and -న్ను usually become -ళ్ళు | కాలు kālu leg | కాళ్ళు kāḷḷu |
| ఇల్లు illu house | ఇళ్ళు iḷḷu | |
| కన్ను kannu eye | కళ్ళు kaḷḷu | |
| A doubled letter can drop | చెట్టు ceṭṭu tree | చెట్లు ceṭlu |
When a plural is not a plain -లు, learn it with the noun.
Before endings
Before a case ending or a postposition, a plural drops its final u: పిల్లలు pillalu "children" gives పిల్లలకు pillalaku "to the children", పిల్లలతో pillalatō "with the children" and పిల్లల పుస్తకాలు pillala pustakālu "the children's books".
Nouns that are plural
A few nouns are plural in Telugu where English uses a mass noun, and they take plural verbs: నీళ్ళు nīḷḷu "water" and పాలు pālu "milk".
- nīḷḷu unnāyā?Is there any water?
- pillalu baḍiki veḷḷāru.The children went to school.
- mā iṁṭi muṁdu reṁḍu ceṭlu unnāyi.There are two trees in front of our house.
- nā daggara mūḍu pustakālu unnāyi.I have three books.
The plural splits by meaning: people take -ఆరు -āru and everything else -ఆయి -āyi (Gender). The plural is also the respectful form for one person: మీరు mīru "you", and verbs in -రు for anyone you respect.
