Days and time
Days of the week, yesterday and tomorrow, ago, and the clock.
Each day of the week ends in -వారం -vāraṁ, and వారం alone means "week". A day needs no ending to say "on": సోమవారం వస్తాను sōmavāraṁ vastānu "I'll come on Monday".
| Day | Telugu |
|---|---|
| Sunday | ఆదివారం ādivāraṁ |
| Monday | సోమవారం sōmavāraṁ |
| Tuesday | మంగళవారం maṁgaḷavāraṁ |
| Wednesday | బుధవారం budhavāraṁ |
| Thursday | గురువారం guruvāraṁ |
| Friday | శుక్రవారం śukravāraṁ |
| Saturday | శనివారం śanivāraṁ |
- ī rōju ē vāraṁ?What day is it today?
Yesterday and tomorrow
| Telugu | Meaning |
|---|---|
| మొన్న monna | the day before yesterday |
| నిన్న ninna | yesterday |
| ఈ రోజు ī rōju, ఇవాళ ivāḷa | today |
| రేపు rēpu | tomorrow |

| పోయిన వారం pōyina vāraṁ | last week |
| వచ్చే వారం vaccē vāraṁ | next week |

పోయిన pōyina "gone" and వచ్చే vaccē "coming" work with నెల nela "month" and సంవత్సరం saṁvatsaraṁ "year" too. The parts of the day also need no ending: రేపు ఉదయం rēpu udayaṁ "tomorrow morning", మధ్యాహ్నం madhyāhnaṁ "in the afternoon", సాయంత్రం sāyaṁtraṁ "in the evening", రాత్రి rātri "at night".
- elluṁḍi sōmavāraṁ.The day after tomorrow is Monday.
Ago and in
క్రితం kritaṁ "ago" follows the "of" form, and -లో "in" on a stretch of time says how soon: రెండు రోజుల క్రితం reṁḍu rōjula kritaṁ "two days ago", రెండు రోజుల్లో reṁḍu rōjullō "in two days".
- nēnu mūḍu saṁvatsarāla kritaṁ ikkaḍiki vaccānu.I came here three years ago.
- padi nimiṣāllō vastānu.I'll be there in ten minutes.
Telling the time
The time is counted in గంటలు gaṁṭalu "hours": ఐదు గంటలు aidu gaṁṭalu "five o'clock", with అయింది ayiṁdi "has become" for "it's" (Become and happen). One o'clock is ఒంటి గంట oṁṭi gaṁṭa. "Half past" is -న్నర -nnara "and a half" on the hour: మూడున్నర mūḍunnara "half past three", ఒకటిన్నర okaṭinnara "half past one". "At" a time takes -కు: ఐదు గంటలకు aidu gaṁṭalaku, మూడున్నరకు mūḍunnaraku.
- ippuḍu ṭaiṁ eṁta?What time is it now?
- aidu gaṁṭalu ayiṁdi.It's five o'clock.
- sinimā mūḍunnaraku modalavutuṁdi.The film starts at half past three.
Months
Months go by their English names, జనవరి janavari, ఫిబ్రవరి phibravari and so on, and dates are plain numbers: జనవరి ఇరవై ఆరు janavari iravai āru "January 26". The Telugu new year, ఉగాది ugādi, falls in March or April.
