Postpositions
Inside, around, like, instead of, and moving with -కి.
Telugu says "in front of the house" with a word after the noun, a postposition. It follows the noun's "of" form, the stem it uses before endings: ఇంటి iṁṭi from ఇల్లు illu, నా nā for "me". The commonest, such as మీద "on" and దగ్గర "near", are in Case endings. Here are more:
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| లోపల lōpala | inside | ఇంటి లోపల iṁṭi lōpala inside the house |
| బయట bayaṭa | outside | ఇంటి బయట iṁṭi bayaṭa outside the house |
| పైన paina | on top of, above | బల్ల పైన balla paina on the table |
| మధ్య madhya | between, among | రెండు ఇళ్ళ మధ్య reṁḍu iḷḷa madhya between two houses |
| చుట్టూ cuṭṭū | around | ఇంటి చుట్టూ iṁṭi cuṭṭū around the house |
| ఎదురుగా edurugā | opposite, facing | బ్యాంకు ఎదురుగా byāṁku edurugā opposite the bank |
| వైపు vaipu | toward | ఊరి వైపు ūri vaipu toward the town |
| లా lā, లాగా lāgā | like | నీలాగా nīlāgā like you |
| తో పాటు tō pāṭu | along with | నాతో పాటు nātō pāṭu along with me |
| బదులు badulu | instead of | టీకి బదులు ṭīki badulu instead of tea |
| ద్వారా dvārā | through, by | ఫోన్ ద్వారా phōn dvārā by phone |
| లేకుండా lēkuṁḍā | without | పంచదార లేకుండా paṁcadāra lēkuṁḍā without sugar |
A few follow an ending instead of the bare "of" form: పాటు comes after -తో, and బదులు after -కి. లా and లాగా are written joined to the word.
Moving: -కి
Where something moves to, a postposition takes -కి, like a noun: లోపలికి lōpaliki "in, inwards", బయటికి bayaṭiki "out", పైకి paiki "up", కిందికి kiṁdiki "down", ముందుకు muṁduku "forward", వెనక్కి venakki "back". So ఇంటి లోపల ఉన్నాడు iṁṭi lōpala unnāḍu is "he's in the house", and ఇంటి లోపలికి వెళ్ళాడు iṁṭi lōpaliki veḷḷāḍu "he went into the house".
- lōpaliki raṁḍi.Come in, please.
- pilli ceṭṭu paiki ekkiṁdi.The cat climbed up the tree.
- pillalu bayaṭa āḍukuṁṭunnāru.The children are playing outside.
On their own
Many of these words also stand alone: లోపల "inside", బయట "outside", ముందు muṁdu "first, earlier" and తర్వాత tarvāta "later".
- muṁdu bhōjanaṁ cēddāṁ, tarvāta māṭlāḍukuṁdāṁ.Let's eat first and talk later.
