Case endings

Endings in place of prepositions.

Telugu adds endings to nouns where English uses words like "to" and "in". Many nouns take a different stem before them: ఇల్లు illu "house" becomes ఇంటి iṁṭi-.

CaseEndingExample
Subject—ఇల్లు illu house
Object-ని, -ను -ni, -nuఇంటిని iṁṭini the house
To, for-కి, -కు -ki, -kuఇంటికి iṁṭiki to the house
With, by-తో -tōకత్తితో kattitō with a knife
OfThe stem aloneఇంటి తలుపు iṁṭi talupu the house's door
In, at-లో -lōఇంట్లో iṁṭlō in the house
Into-లోకి -lōkiఇంట్లోకి iṁṭlōki into the house
Fromనుండి nuṁḍiఇంటి నుండి iṁṭi nuṁḍi from the house

When -లో joins a stem in i, the i usually drops: ఇంటిలో is said and written ఇంట్లో iṁṭlō. నుండి nuṁḍi is also said నుంచి nuṁci, and is written joined to the noun or as a separate word.

The object ending

People take the object ending, and so do particular things. Objects that are things often take no ending, especially when no particular one is meant.

-కి or -కు

Both mean "to, for". In careful writing, -కి follows a stem that ends in i (ఇంటికి iṁṭiki, దానికి dāniki) and -కు follows other vowels (అమ్మకు ammaku); in speech, -కి is common after any noun. The pronouns నా, నీ, మా, మన and మీ always take -కు: నాకు nāku "to me". The object endings -ని and -ను follow the same pattern, and -ని after a stem in i contracts to -న్ని: అతని + ని is అతన్ని atanni, పుస్తకాని + ని is పుస్తకాన్ని pustakānni.

-కి and -కు also mark a time, ఐదు గంటలకు aidu gaṁṭalaku "at five o'clock", and the person who likes, knows or needs something: నాకు తెలుసు nāku telusu "I know" (Liking, knowing, needing).

Stems before endings

Nouns in -ం take -ఆన్ని for the object and -ఆనికి for "to", but keep -ం before -లో and -తో. Nouns in -డు use -డి- before endings, and plurals drop their final u.

Postpositions

Other relations are separate words after the "of" form of the noun (Postpositions has more):
