The week starts on Monday, and days and months are written in small letters. "In" a month is en: en janvier. Seasons are le printemps, l'été, l'automne and l'hiver: au printemps, but en été, en automne, en hiver.

The date

The day comes before the month, with le and a plain number: le 14 juillet. Only the first is an ordinal: le premier mai, written le 1er mai. In figures the day comes first too: 14/07/2025. On est le combien ? or Quelle est la date ? asks the date; On est le 3 mars answers it. Years are said like numbers: en 2025, deux mille vingt-cinq.

Telling the time

Everyday time counts up to the half hour, then down from the next hour with moins. Timetables, shops and the news use 24-hour time, written 15 h 30. Quelle heure est-il ? asks the time, Il est … answers, and à gives the time of something: à huit heures.

Today, tomorrow

aujourd'hui today, demain tomorrow, hier yesterday; ce matin, cet après-midi, ce soir; demain matin, hier soir; la semaine prochaine next week, le mois dernier last month.
